Interior ADU Conversion - Constructed from existing, but underutilized space, such as the attic or basement.
Garage ADU Conversion - A basement acts as a buffer zone, reducing noise from the upper levels of your home. This is particularly advantageous if you live in a busy neighborhood or near a main road.

Recent ADU Law Changes by Phoenix City Council

The Phoenix City Council voted 8-1 to approve changes to the city’s housing code, aimed at addressing the affordable housing shortage. This decision allows homeowners to build accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in their backyards. Here are some of the key points:

The vote means owners of detached single family homes can build Accessory Dwelling Units, or ADUs, most known as casitas, guest houses, or in-law suites, in backyards.
ADU must be connected to the sewer, water and electricity of the single-family home.
Homeowners would be allowed to rent the structure, but they must live in either the main home or in the ADU.
ADUs need to meet certain requirements and be approved by the city. Requirements include being no bigger than 1,000 square feet for if the lot is under 10,000 square feet, no taller than 15 feet, and cannot be more than 75% of the primary home size.
ADUs can also be in multi-family zoning areas as long as the ADU is used for one family.
